Walter August Looman was born in the town of Princetown in Schenectady County, New York, on June 21, 1895. Before entering the military, he was living with his cousins and working for the Hudson Food Products Company.
On March 1, 1918, Walter enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Greene in North Carolina. He was a corporal serving in Company L, 39th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On September 27, 1918, Walter was killed in combat during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He is buried in France's Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and remembered in Schenectady, New York's Vale Cemetery. His gravestone in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery says he died on September 27, but his gravestone in Vale Cemetery says he died on September 26.
