Walter August Looman, the son of Henry and Minna (Graper) Looman, was born on June 21, 1895, in the Town of Princetown,  Schenectady County, New York. In the city of Schenectady, he resided with his cousins. Before joining the military, Walter worked for the Hudson Food Products Company.

On March 1, 1918, Walter enlisted in the United States Army and began serving at Camp Greene in North Carolina. He was a Corporal in Company L of the 39th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On September 27, 1918, Walter was killed in combat during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He is buried in France's Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and remembered in Schenectady, New York's Vale Cemetery. Walter's gravestone in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery says he died on September 27, but his gravestone in Vale Cemetery says he died on September 26.
