Walter Merrill was born on February 23, 1910, in Otsego County, New York. By 1930, he and his wife Helena were residing in Rotterdam, New York. Prior to enlisting, Walter worked for the General Electric Company.
Walter enlisted in the United States Army on April 6, 1944, and underwent basic training at Camp Croft in South Carolina. He held the rank of Private First Class and served with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. On October 19, 1944, he was deployed to serve overseas. On April 9, 1945, Walter was killed in combat in Germany. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, France.
