Walter R. Marchewka, the son of Alexander and Rozalia Marchewka, was born on September 1, 1921, in Schenectady, New York. Before joining the military, he attended Vocational High School.

On January 16, 1940, Walter enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort McClellan in Alabama. He was a Private First Class with Company H, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. Walter was transferred to Hawaii in February 1942, where he served until July 7, 1944, when he was declared dead while missing during the Battle of Saipan. Walter is remembered at St. Adalbert Cemetery, Rotterdam, New York.
