William Henry Prothero, the son of John and Mary Prothero, was born on October 31, 1945, in Schenectady, New York. He attended Linton High School.

William enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in August of 1965, and on July 28, 1967, he began his tour of duty in Vietnam. He held the rank of Lance Corporal and served with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On November 26, 1967, as actions were underway against North Vietnamese forces, William was killed by enemy rifle fire close to the South Vietnamese province of Quang Nam. He is buried in Viewland Cemetery, Rotterdam, New York.
