William John Serrell Jr., the son of William and Bessie (Golden) Serrell, was born on June 11, 1911, in Schenectady, New York. Before enlisting in the military, he worked for General Electric.

William enlisted in the United States Army on February 1, 1944, and was a skilled rifleman at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, where he underwent his basic training. He held the rank of Private and served with the 320th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. Before being sent to war in August of 1944, he was stationed in Maryland. On August 13, 1944, at Mortain, France, William was killed in action. He is buried in the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, New York.
